Project P.U.L.L. is a freshman mentoring program at Southeastern Louisiana University. The purpose of the program is to help guide freshmen through their first year of college.

Taylor Harris the mentor coordinator remarked that the program “really helps the freshmen that come in to get to know the school.”

Transitioning from being a highschool student and living under a parent’s guidance to becoming a college student, can be very confusing. In college there’s no one to say “no you can’t go hang out” or checking in to see if students finished their work. So you have to tap into self-discipline, which is hard for some people to find which makes it hard to create a balance.

This is where Project P.U.L.L comes to play, because the mentors are experienced college students who’ve experienced those same scenarios and have come up with solutions they can now advise the next set of freshman.

At the beginning of each semester the program starts with an informative meeting informing exactly what Project P.U.L.L is

According to Project P.U.L.L coordinator Sh’laya Coleman, “It is a great program. It’s good for networking, for meeting new people, for learning leadership skills that we are not taught in the classroom and getting acquainted with the staff, because we have staff members come in and speak.”

Next is pairing the mentors with mentees. The pairing process is done through a questionnaire. On the questionnaire Students choose whether or not they’re signing up to be a mentor or mentee. Then it asks basic questions about the students major, gender and likes and dislikes of the student. Such as the students’ favorite music, hobby, food and much more.

The pairing meeting took place Feb. 10. after the signup deadline.

Before the students meet, the leadership asks the mentees what kind of characteristics they are looking for in a mentor. Most of the students looked for loyalty, good advice, and to be on a no-judgment basis with their mentor.

Then the leadership team introduces the mentor with their mentee. Once a pair was announced they would get together and formally introduce themselves and exchange contact information outside of the room. If there was any reason that a mentor or mentee was not present then one of the team leaders would give either one their contact information.

Project P.U.L.L holds meetings every Monday night in Fayard Hall. For those who are interested in the program can message and follow Project P.U.L.L on Twitter @SluProjectPull.
